Amber Von Tussle, you have been such an interesting and complex role to play. This role allowed me to push my boundaries and explore parts of myself I never knew existed. It was a fascinating journey to transform myself into a character who was so outwardly mean, yet insecure with her own ability to fit with the “acceptable” beauty norms of the 60s. Amber represented the goals of every teenage girl at the time, but the musical shows us that we can find acceptance in ourselves no matter our skin color, body weight, or sexual orientation.
Hairspray has been the best musical experience I’ve ever had. I was so fortunate to spend the past 3 months rehearsing amongst such a supportive, loving cast. I built so many new friendships throughout the process and had a family by the end. I’d like to thank Mr. Goldyn, Mr. Sacks, Ms. Volk, and Ms. Bruno as well for making this production possible and challenging me to grow as a performer. I couldn’t have asked for a better show to end high school with. As a freshman, I would’ve never expected to land a principal role and sing notes far beyond my initial vocal range. Growth is a powerful thing. My heart is full.
